Spa extension and rehabilitation

Punta Marina (Ravenna) , 2008

Selezione Architettura 2010 Emilia – Romagna IBC  (one of the 12 best projects)

Design: 2002-2006

Execution: 2006-2008

This new intervention was developed around an existing and functioning spa structure dating to the 1960s. An extension of the pre-existent building with the addition of a new pool and wading course, a beauty centre, a general out-patients clinic and a 26 room hotel aimed prevalently at Spa users.

The main objectives of the project were to “conceal” as much as possible the old premises by means of certain formal and compositional devices. The new bodies are fixed to the pre-existent ones, clutching them as if in a vice. The new ones become the chief features and dictate the new rules of the skyline and new relationships with the sea on the one hand and the pinewood on the other.
The use of brise-soleil downstands moreover allowed the determination of a different and artificial horizon line.  The whole of the new part is in wood, designed externally with horizontal shingles in natural treated larch, and the windows ordered in double rows one above the other define the prospect as in a musical score.

An ecocompatible building of high energy containment. The whole is completed by a new environmental arrangement which envisages reconstruction of the pre-existent dune cordons.
